Introduction

Today, there are really five areas that comprise the destination of Puerto Vallarta. Immediately north of the airport is the newest beachfront resort area called Nuevo Vallarta. Moving south from the airport is Marina Vallarta with its golf course and upscale condos and hotels. Further south is the traditional hotel zone along the Boulevard Francisco Medina Ascensio, a palm-lined boulevard to town with a string of beachfront hotels. Next is El Centro, downtown, with its cobblestone streets that wind past red tiled roofed houses. There are exclusive little boutique, souvenir shops, restaurants energized with mariachi music and little old hotels with cozy bars. Finally, just south of town, away from the action is the "conchas Chinas" upscale area. Beyond for those who seek even more. From sport fishing to para-sailing, snorkeling to horseback riding…whatever your desire, you'll find it in the mountains, jungles and seas that surround Puerto Vallarta coastline

We were staying  in the Nuevo Vallarta area

Puerto Vallarta

Charter package with Sunquest January 26- February 2/07 - offers in flight meals, and movies and we received 2 free drinks and headphones with our group package

Regina to Puerto Vallarta flight about 4 hrs 38 min on Skyservice. Flight was nice and smooth, with a clear view watching the snowy flat fields turn into Mexico's Copper Canyon and mountains that surround Puerto Vallarta

Once we landed and disembarked onto the tarmac, we hopped on a bus to take us to the terminal, where we passed through immigration and pick up our luggage, push the button and hoped for green, which means go ahead with out having to be searched. Then through  the many time share reps trying to con us into checking out their condos. Once we found our Sunquest representative he showed us to our bus that shuttle us to the resort. There was about 30 people with 19 of them in our group. It took about 40 mins from the airport to our resort that was located in Nuevo Vallarta

Riu Jalisco

Ph: 52 (322) 226-6600 Website: www.riu.com
Beachfront property located on Flamingo beach

Check in was rather smooth once the staff figured out that we had just arrived and need to be checked in first before going to the orientation, we all gathered in the lobby bar where we were handed our room and safe keys, pool towel cards and wrist bands, some of our rooms were not yet ready. The Sunquest orientation with Andres was informative and he was always at the tour desk  willing to help.

Accommodations

Accommodations included: 700 guestrooms, 674 double rooms, 20 Jr suites and 6 Jacuzzi suites

The standard rooms are decorated in a Mexican feel with the furniture a dark red wood with pale yellow walls, lamps and wall art in blues, yellow and rust clay colors. Large king size beds with a hard mattress, 2 night stands,  2 chair and a table, AC, ceiling fan, safe, Satellite TV, direct dial phone, large bathroom, with closet, dressing area, large walk in shower and enclosed toilet , hair dryer, amenities kits, large towels that were always replaced daily, the bathroom is separated from the bedroom by curtains. I was always excited to see what towel figures we would get each day. Liquor dispenser loaded with 26 oz. Vodkas, Tequila, Rum, Whiskey, stocked mini fridge with coronas, pops, waters, which is restocked every 2 days. Balcony with 2 chairs and a table. This room over look a bare lot with a new condo being build and the very large and beautiful new Riu Vallarta next to it. We found it to be a bit noisy with the staff using the back walkway to transport supplies. We asked to be moved and we ended up with a great view of the garden in the middle section of the resort. It did not have a clock, but wake up calls were always on time. To use the iron was a $20.00 deposit charged to your room and then uncharged once returned and no ironing board???. Some of our group seemed to have problems with the TV/remotes not working and the hard beds which they asked for foam mattress covers to soften up..

The family room was the same as the guestroom with 2 double beds instead of a king

Jr suites were spacious with a separate living area with a couch , chairs, table, king size bed that was raised with a view to the ocean, large bathroom with a tub and shower and duvet.  large terrace

I was not able to view the Jacuzzi suites as they were all occupied but it seemed that a spiral staircase that lead to a second floor with an outside Jacuzzi

Restaurants & Bars

The food was just OK, I expected better for a 5 star resort. The staff always friendly and fast service but the food could of been refreshed a little more often as it seem that when a dish was empty it took awhile for it to replaced with fresh food.

Don Emiliano - Served buffet breakfast from 7:00 - 10:30 am. Great selection of fruit, yogurts, cereals, made to order eggs & omelets, pancakes, French toast, crepes, fresh juices
It turns into a International supper buffet from 6:30 - 10:30 pm. Was probably the best buffet supper with turkey and all the fixings, great selection of desert, and ice creams. We really enjoyed this supper and the staff seemed much more personable
Dona Adelita - Served buffet breakfast from 7:00 - 10:30 am this is a smaller buffet version of Don Emiliano
It turned into a Mexican supper buffet served from 6:30 - 10:30 pm (we did not eat here)
La Botana - Continental breakfast from 10:30 am -12:00.
Lunch buffet from 12:00 - 5:00 pm. Served basic soups, salads, hamburgers, hot dogs, nachos, pastas, deserts. Had a good selection
Snacks 12:00 - 5:00 pm - Hamburgers & hotdogs
A la carte -
Asian restaurant - served great Asian food, with lots of different sushi, Chinese food, and fried ice-cream.
Nayarit - Served lunch from 12:30 - 4:00 pm (basic Italian buffet, with pasta, rice, salad, if you did not get there early I found that the food was dried up)
Brazilian Rodizio  -
A la carte Brazilian Steak house the worst food we had, the meat was fatty, and just not real good from start to finish, we were served a salad, then a plate of fried bananas, a few veggies
Terraza Nayarit
Served snacks from 11:00 pm till 2:00 am

There were 6 bars: La Cantina lobby bar, Pancho & Villas garden bars, Bahia Banderas pool/swim up bar, La Botana beach bar, Pacha Disco. Drinks seem to be plentiful with bar staff always fast and friendly and generous.

Courtyard/Gardens

Once you come down the main stairs you were on ground level, from the main building you traveled pass the 2 main restaurants with a sitting area, passed the gazebo that is a replica of the church in down town Puerto Vallarta, the gazebo is located over a large water feature with water fountains at each end, lined with plants, bushes, and palm tress. The ground are immaculate with well trimmed hedges, green grass and lush vegetation. Once past the fountain, the out door theater is on the right with lots of chairs and tables, 2 bars are located here and only seemed to be open when the nightly entertainment is on. On the left is the washrooms, the Disco and the Nayarit restaurant. You can find the board with the daily/nightly activities listed here. As you walked further you had the choice to go right to the adult pool area or left to the kids pool and play area. A little further and you can go left to the spa/gym and the La Botana restaurant,  go right to the water sports centre or straight to the beach.

Pools

There are 2 large pools: one for children with a multi water slide, it is surrounded with large palm trees, and vegetation, lots of lounge chairs, and the kids mini club and play area

The adult pool is large with a swim up bar, Jacuzzi and pool loungers, lots of lounge chairs to be found. the area is surrounded with palms and vegetation. They played water polo, pool games, scuba lesson and dance lesson, name that tunes and Spanish lessons.

Beach

The beach is huge with soft fine creamy sand, as you get closer to the water the tide stirs up a darker sand but still is the perfect beach for sun and water worshippers. You can walk for miles either way. I didn't expect it to be so nice. There are 100’s of loungers and finding a chair was never a problem in the full sun or shaded under a palm. The ocean waves crash along the beach made for a relaxing day and the best for water sports. There was no seaweed or jelly fish. Green flags always up. non motorized water sports are located at the beach hut and free to use. We were on the beach at night and felt completely safe. There are vendors on the beach and a simply no thanks will keep them on their way. It seemed that some people had been bitten by what we think might be sand fleas.
Gym/Spa

The fitness centre is fully equipped with bikes, strength training machines and treadmills

Renova Spa is a full service spa with an array of services and reasonable priced, with a hair salon , nails, waxing, massages, facials, body wraps, treatments and special therapies. Plus 1 out door cabanas situated on the beach for single and couple's messages. I did notice that they had stretching classes happen on the beach one morning.
I did take advantage of a 50 min message on the beach, it was nice and relaxing with the birds chirping and the waves crashing in the back ground, a perfect way to start a day the cost was $68.00 usd. There is a Jacuzzi located in the spa.
Activities/Excursion

Sunquest Tour desk - located in lobby where we booked our tours. Andres and Alfonso were great. I highly recommend taking your tours with Vallarta Adventures

Night Moves
pub crawl, received transportation and admission to 4 bars in down town, a free drink at each bar and a T-shirt. Went to JB’s Latin Disco, Senor Frog, Hilo, and Carlos O’Briens

Canopy tour with Vallarta Adventures, this was something that I pre-booked with this company prior to arrival as there was 11 of us that wanted to go and they only allow 20 at a time, we also added one more once we got there. We took a taxi to the Vallarta Adventure tours office, which was about 15 mins away. It is the same location as the dolphin encounter is located. We were loaded in the back of a truck for a hour long ride thru the back roads pass the prison and thru old towns like Las Palmas up thru the mountains and jungle. Once there the fun began, the staff got us hooked up with helmets, harness, gloves, then over for a brief orientation, the staff was fun and friendly and totally a great experience. We walked up to the first of 14 platform, from there one by one we were hooked up with double cables, sat back, feet up away we flew and a tree monkey we became, from heights ranging 90’ high and the longest distance of 650’ long . It's truly a leap of faith the first time you jump off the  platform, but once you're flying thru the air, with the ground far below and the lush forest all around, you forget any fears you might have had until  you are standing on the small platform waiting for the next ride which is little scary and I am proud to say I am a tree hugger, it was an absolute blast, truly an adrenaline rush and we felt totally safe the whole way. After the rides we had to rappel down to the ground and that is a cool experience as you lean and looked backward as you coast to the ground, then the hard part is the 15 min hike back up to the top where we started. Then took off the equipment went to the little shop where we watched a few minutes of our video that is for purchase and then back on the bus for the 1 hr ride back.

Some of the group did the City tour , and really enjoyed it Some did the Pirate ship and said they had a blast and well worth the time and money, great food and entertainment. Some did the Snorkeling and saw whale, dolphins and fish, We also did the Rhythms of the Night more detail of this night is below

Weddings

           We were there to celebrate
             Robbin & Neil's wedding.

The ceremony took place on the beach at sunset as the Minister read them their wedding vows in Spanish, the wedding coordinator translating them into English. My clients told me that Andrea the wedding coordinator did a great job in assisting then with all the wedding details, the paper work blood test. They had sent their paper work down 3 weeks prior and had the resort translated into Spanish. They had their blood test done at the resort and was quick and simply. They were upgraded to a Jr suite - it had a king size bed that was raised up from the living area, a large terrace with ocean view.  The ceremony site was cornered off and was decorated with an arch, chairs for the guest, a table for the signing of the papers and a table for the champagne. There was a few spectators but not intrusive at all. A photographer took some really good photos. The reception was at the La Botana restaurant which is located on by the beach, for a wonderful sunset dinner.  A piano man played during the supper  and then for a little dancing after

Originally she had to reserve her date on the www.weddingsbyriu.com and waited for a reply to confirm a date, trying to get in contact with the wedding coordinator seemed to be a lengthy wait, but then once in contact it smooth.

Vow Renewal

This year we renewed our wedding vows for our 7th year anniversary. It started at Vallarta Adventures at 4:30 pm where we met Nichole from Adventure Weddings. We boarded a 1 hr catamaran with an open bar and fun entertaining staff. We sailed over to the Marina to pick up more people, then cruised passed Puerto Vallarta to get a real panoramic view of how big Banderas Bay really is, with the mountains in the back ground and Puerto Vallarta at the base of them. We continued south pass Los Arcos till we could see in the distance faint lights, as we got closer we could see that the lights were torches & candles lighting up this hidden jungle cove only accessible by boat known as Las Celetas. We were greeted by Brad our Minister and welcomed by the performers all dressed in their costume ready for the evening performance. A smell of inscent followed us as we strolled down torch lit path to a hut that was the bridal suite where we were able to freshen up. This bridal suite is a large room with a bed draped with a white canopy, a large couch to sit many bridesmaid, a large bathroom with walk-in shower, a sink made out of a tree truck and a vanity area where my beautiful tropical bouquet was waiting for me.
I headed down cobblestone stairs and followed the candle lit path to Colin. This private terrace over looked the ocean, the sounds of the waves crashing in the back ground was the perfect music and the candle and torches was truly the most romantic back drop ever as the sun was setting. The ceremony was romantic and the Unity of Sand was a really meaningful touch. We signed the certificate, had a champagne toast, posed for pictures and then sat down with our friends as we over looked the ocean for the best meal that we had our whole trip, it was chicken, steak and seafood, & fish, with a mushroom sauce, veggies, pasta, rice, potatoes, fruit and chocolate cake to die for. After supper we were summon along more torch-lit path to a pyramid in the heart of the shadowy jungle as the sounds of drums beat louder. We had front row seats to watch the Rhythms of the Night a Pre - Hispanic dance performance of the Mexican culture and a Mexican Wedding, How much more romantic can it get!

Nichole from Adventure Weddings - what can I say, She is wonderful. Her prompt replies to my many inquiries and the many casual conversation that we had really show that she cares about what she does and willing to make sure that it is the best for her clients. The big hug that I received when we met says a lot. That personal touch is something that I look for the when dealing with a wedding coordinators and she is genuine. Adventure weddings is definitely a professional wedding company that offers unique wedding options. They are now on the top of my list and I will highly recommend them with confidence to any of my client. A new found friendship and looking forward to many new wedding adventures in the future.

Brad our minister and a super all around great guy and a new friend. This was the best renewal we have had and a lot of it had to do with him and his willing to show us a really great time. Gracias Amigo

Plus A Special Thanks  to our friends and photographers Rick & Lynn, thanks for being apart of our special night.

Conclusion

I would recommend this resort to someone that would like to stay away from the main attractions of PV, This resort is great for the sun for those that just want to relax and water worshipper with unlimited beach and great water fun for everyone. All thought the food could be better for a 5 star, there was a variety to chose from and we never went hungry. The look and feel of this resort is 5 star, clean, well kept up,  beautiful with the full lush grounds, pool and beach area always clean. The beach and water was great and the sand a nice fine soft sand. The staff and service was friendly and I never noticed anything other then that. I never felt like I needed to tip extra to get better service. I enjoyed my stay here very much.

I feel that Puerto Vallarta is addicting, and I now can relate to all the other people that say they love it here and return over and over every year. There are so many things that we never did get to see and explore,  which is why we are already talking about returning. I do think we will scale down in our choice of resort and stay closer to PV or in Old Town. Having friends that know the area like the back of their hand really helps and they know of the many quaint little hideaway hotels and  fine dining restuarants. Plus they know where the good deals are and the things to do and not to do, which really makes it a great experience. Plus they have wonderful sunsets

Other Resort Review

RIU VALLARTA HOTEL

I had plans with the sales manager to go for a tour with him, but he had to cancel, so I went and did a walk though on my own. This is a brand new resort that had just open in Nov 06 and is located just a few resorts south from the RIU Jalisco. We thought that we might have exchange privileges but we didn't, but they had stay at 1, play at 2 which meant they could take advantage of our resort facilities.

The lobby is very large and impressive, everything so new and shiny, with a large check in desk, h lots of chairs, lobby bar, gift and jewelry shops.

What I could find was 4 restaurants that served as Buffets and al a carte and 5 bars that seemed to be mostly located on ground floor below the lobby area. We did sample lunch at the Flamingo Restaurant that was located closest to the beach, the food was the same basic buffet with a little more showman ship in the food preparations

From the main building heading to the beach you pass the theater, the large water fountain, the 2 pools one side for adults with swim up bar and the other the kids pool, with multi water slides

The beach is large and has lots of chairs,  once the vegetation grow this will be a very nice resort

Other areas

Bucerias  - was about a 50 min easy walk down the beach, to a small quiet Mexican town, it had a  small flea market and family owned shops, like The Pink Dove Boutique where Grace was happy to alter a dress I bought from her right there on  the spot. Lots of small hotels & condos and great restaurants. This is a nice little hideaway for some one that just want total relaxation and the amenities of a small town
