Pink sand exists in only a few places worldwide. Bermuda
boasts some of the boldest displays of this revered coastal color, lapped
by our dazzling turquoise waves. Absolute poetry.
Small though it is, we do divide our island into smaller sections of land,
or parishes. These eight parishes reflected the principal shareholders in
the original Somers Island Company. The ninth parish, St. George's, takes
its name from England's patron saint and Sir George Somers, the admiral of
the Sea Venture, which wrecked off Bermuda in 1609.
Many people mistakenly believe our island is part of the Caribbean. In fact,
we rest hundreds of miles north of the Bahamas in an astoundingly beautiful
stretch of the Atlantic.
